History

In the early days, sawmills were constructed in the area now known as Hartville, as lumber was in high demand for building barns and houses. George Creighbaum opened a saw mill in 1830 just south of Hartville by Nimishillen Creek, and Samuel Brumbaugh later opened one in the late 1800s south of Congress Lake. Hardships prevailed for early settlers of this area, who faced problems with wild animals, sickness, road conditions, and finances. Despite the challenges, pioneers enjoyed life to the fullest. More and more settlers arrived to the area, and the village of Hartville grew in size, spirit, and charm.

The Village of Uniontown was laid out in 1816. Due to the introduction of railroads, Uniontown became a center of commerce and industry. Its first general store opened in 1825, followed by a post office and a blacksmith shop a few years later. During this time, cabinetmakers, tanneries, hatters and foundries were rapidly increasing in number. The concentration of high-quality manufacturers gave Uniontown an exceptional reputation as a manufacturing hub long before the days of the Civil War. The first brick road in the area was constructed just before World War I, running between Greentown and Uniontown. The road, which was originally a State Route, is now maintained by the county and is known as Cleveland Avenue.
